I'm thrilled to announce that I've been asked to speak at the 8th Annual International Day of Yoga Celebration in San Diego! I will be speaking about Yoga's applications in therapy and sharing my own experience and research in Yoga for diabetes. I won't have too much time on the mic but hope to share a bit about my own Yoga journey, which began with my attempt to heal a severe back injury, my focus on Yoga's metabolic impact in my work, and to give everyone a taste of how even simple, accessible practices (if intelligently designed) can have an immense positive impact on us. I would love to see some familiar faces there so if you can make it, it would be lovely!
The event won't be very long (only a couple of hours) but will be packed with varied and rich perspectives on Yoga. The activities will include brief lectures and practices, coming from different traditions and emphases in Yoga:
Praveen Appani and Paul Moore- Hatha Yoga, Vivekananda Yoga Center, San Diego
Ravi Halker & Bhadra Christina Jones- Guided Meditation for Wellbeing. Integrated Amrita Meditation (IAM)
Oreste Prada - Therapeutic Applications of Yogāsana and Prāṇāyāma. Crossroads in Focus, Krishnamacharya Healing and Yoga Foundation
Monique Cornfield- Journey into Deep Yogāsanas. Peace Love and Yoga Wellness Studios, North County
Participants are asked to register here, to bring a Yoga mat, clothing you can comfortably move in, sunscreen, and water (as the event will take place outdoors).
This particular celebration has special meaning because it comes on the 75th anniversary of Indian independence. Yoga has been referred to as the greatest gift that India has given to the world. Given India's (and Indians') many other contributions in medicine, astronomy, agriculture, technology, mathematics, and even board games, this is no small status. For many around the world, Yoga, a system that is both philosophical and practical, universal and personal, with a focus on holistic health as well as spiritual development, is an entry point to India. It is a huge source of Indian pride and inevitably tied to Indian identity.
The event is being coordinated by the Consulate General of India in San Francisco and the House of India in Balboa Park, and is being sponsored by the Indian Council for Cultural Relations, the State Bank of India, and the Industrial Credit and Investment Corporation of India. The 8th International Day of Yoga celebration will take place in Mission Bay's Crown Point Park this Saturday, June 18th from 9a.m. to 11a.m.
